Barcelona’s transfer business in the past few years has been suspect at best.
After selling Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2017, the Blaugrana have embarked on a spree of lavish spending which certainly has not paid off.
Both Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele have struggled immensely since arriving at the Camp Nou, while Arthur Melo and Frenkie de Jong haven’t exactly set the world on fire either.
But that hasn’t stopped Barca being linked with one of the most eyebrow-raising transfer rumours of 2020 so far.
The Spanish giants’ interest in Tottenham flop Tanguy Ndombele is well-known, but the offer they have reportedly made to Spurs almost beggars belief.
The financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic is, of course, a factor in play here, but even so that’s surely an offer too tempting for the north London side to turn down – right?
Spurs have been in desperate need of both a new right-back in centre-back for well over a year now and when they’re in-form, Umtiti and Semedo are two of the best around.
Barca’s interest in Ndombele is said to be fuelled by their desire to add ‘physicality’ to their midfield.
When he’s not strolling round and failing to record a single sprint in 45 minutes of action, Ndombele – who cost Spurs £54m last summer – does fit the bill.
One look at some of his highlight packages from his days with Lyon will tell you that.
However, his obvious lack of application – similar to that of his countryman Dembele – should set the alarm bells ringing among the Barca hierarchy.
But given the club’s recent transfer history, it almost certainly won’t!
