Clark ready to take chance

Ciaran Clark is determined to seize his big chance to put himself in contention for the Republic of Ireland's crucial World Cup qualifier in Macedonia.

The 21-year-old Aston Villa defender will line up at left-back for his country against Uruguay on Tuesday night as he wins his second senior cap. However, with Richard Dunne suspended for the trip to Skopje in June, there is a place up for grabs and the versatile Clark could be one of the contenders to fill the vacancy.

He said: "I would like to put in a good performance and it is a good chance for me from now until the end of the season to show what I can do."

He added: "There are a lot of good players in the squad and everyone will be fighting for places in the team because everyone wants to play.

"But we have got tomorrow night's game to concentrate on, then there are the Nations Cup games which will give players a chance to impress."

Trapattoni might have asked Clark to play alongside Darren O'Dea in the middle, but decided to select him in the left-back spot, where he has performed creditably for his club in recent times.

The Italian said: "Ciaran Clark is still quite young and at times, it is dangerous in that position.

"He is young and young players are always anxious to get on the ball, and that's the danger.

"If you make a mistake in the box, it's a goal. With a mistake near the touchline, it's possible to recover."
