WWE news: Release of WWE 2K21 appears to have been cancelled

WWE 2K21 has been cancelled

WWE has appeared to confirm that this year's WWE 2K21 video game has been cancelled.

The news won't come as a massive surprise to fans, given last year's disastrous instalment of the title.

2K20 was slammed by critics and players upon launch for being near unplayable due to game-breaking bugs and plenty of other technical issues.

It seems there won't be any chance for developer Visual Concepts to redeem themselves this year, with WWE interim chief financial officer Frank Riddick confirming the title won't be released.

"There’s not going to be a launch of a game this year," he said when asked a question about WWE 2K21 during a financial call, per EuroGamer.

The news has yet to be officially confirmed by 2K Games, but they teased some 'exciting news' is coming on Monday.

"We will be sharing details on the future of the WWE 2K franchise as well as some exciting news on Monday at 7:00 a.m. PT," WWE Games tweeted on Friday.

There is speculation that a non-sim game could be dropping later this year, but those reports are unconfirmed.

WWE 2K20 could be the last game

While wrestling fans will likely be disappointed if they don't get a video game of some form in 2020, last year proved that rushing out titles simply doesn't work.

Developer Visual Concepts took over for WWE 2K20 after former developer Yuke’s left to begin work on their own wrestling project.

Despite a lot of hype - Visual Concepts are the studio behind the very popular NBA 2K series - their stab at a WWE sim was simply terrible.

WWE 2K20 was a broken game

There were so many game-breaking bugs upon release that Sony was offering full refunds for anyone who purchased it for PS4.

Anything other than a broken game would be an improvement this year, should one drop at all.
