The people have spoken.

In the eyes of 57% of GiveMeSport fans, you would prefer to have Gianluigi Buffon in your team, over Iker Casillas who ended the voting with a sorry 43%.

Two of the greatest keepers to ever stand in between the sticks went head to head in a poll - voted for by GiveMeSport fans - and Italian 2006 World Cup winner Buffon won the vote.

Despite a quite unbelievable career, Spanish 2010 World Cup winner Iker Casillas failed to beat Italian superstar Buffon.

Buffon, who is currently 42 years old, holds the longest streak without conceding a goal in Serie A with 12 games (974 minutes).

Although a quite dazzling career in goal for various clubs, Buffon also starred for his country. He is the most capped Italian by a long way, captaining his side 154 occasions having played just 176 games.

‘Gigi’ Buffon has the joint-most amount of appearances in Serie A as well, sitting alongside Paulo Maldini on 647.

The Italian won the World Cup in dramatic fashion. After 120 minutes (normal time and extra time) couldn’t separate the sides, a penalty shootout went in favour of Italy, 5-3.

In the 2006 World Cup, where Buffon won his first and only World Cup, he had the joint-fewest goals conceded in a single FIFA World Cup by a starting World Cup-winning goalkeeper (2 goals in 7 appearances).

This is a record he shares with Iker Casillas.

Similarly to the previous record, the two also share the most IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper Awards at 5.

Casillas ended on the wrong end of the vote, in the end, however, Casillas also had one of the most decorated carers of all time.

Alongside Buffon, Casillas is in the talk for greatest goalkeeper of all time. In fact, according to many top pundits, these two almost share the accolade.

The Spaniard won the World Cup in 2010 in a 1-0 (AET) win over the Netherlands.
For country, Casillas played 167 times.

Although Casillas had a very good international career, he enjoyed a myriad of success in club football as well, namely at Real Madrid.

Casillas was the youngest goalkeeper to win a UEFA Champions League final at 19 years and four days.

Also in the Champions League, Casillas was the first player in Champions League history to reach the knock-out stages 19 times.

For club, Casillas appeared 630 times. This includes 510 appearances for Real Madrid and 116 for Porto amongst time spent early on in his career for Real Madrid B and C teams respectively.
