Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz have already had two spectacular fights, with Diaz walking away victorious in the first fight and McGregor then winning the rematch.

This hasn’t, however, stopped the pair from trading disses at each other ever since.

ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, as per Daily Mail, has now reported that we could be seeing the pair complete a trilogy of fights, depending on the result of Tony Ferguson’s main event fight with Justin Gaethje at UFC 249.

The already delayed UFC 249 is now set to take place on May 9, if there isn’t any more setbacks due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Dana White is prepared for any further delays that UFC may face, with his very own ‘Fight Island’ which is a private island that Dana White has claimed will be ready to host future fights from June.

Should the island have to come into action, we could potentially see a much anticipated third fight between the two bitter rivals.

The potential match-up between the two would probably be the pair’s final fight between each other, with the winner walking away with a score of 2-1 in the trilogy of fights.

The pair’s first fight was back at UFC 196, where Diaz won by means of submission after he choked McGregor out. The Irishman then defeated Diaz by a controversial judges' decision, so hopefully in a potential third fight we’d see a knockout.

It is reported that should Ferguson win at UFC 249, then we will likely see the pair square off for the third and final time, as they have both returned to action after lengthy spells away from the Octagon.

Ariel Helwani ignited the rumours of this potential match-up by saying: “If Tony Ferguson vs Justin Gaethje actually happens on May 9, I feel like Nathan Diaz will be the big winner. How so? Well, let's say Ferguson beats Gaethje.

“That should guarantee a Ferguson-Khabib Nurmagomedov fight in the fall, right? It would also knock Gaethje out of a top rankings spot. Who was Gaethje supposed to fight in July? Conor McGregor.

“No chance they do that fight if Gaethje is coming off a loss, right? OK, what if Gaethje wins, you ask? Then he fights Nurmagomedov, right? Again, freeing up McGregor.

Now, in this scenario they could do Ferguson vs. McGregor, but I also feel like either May 9 scenario opens the door to make the trilogy fight between Diaz and McGregor.

“So, if May 9 actually happens, don't be surprised if Diaz emerges as a player in the McGregor sweepstakes.”

McGregor is also keen to complete the trilogy of fights with Diaz, after he called him out after his jaw-dropping 40-second knockout victory over Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone.

"Number three, it's always here, so, we're right here Nathan." McGregor said following his win.

Diaz, however, has not fought since his loss to Jorge Masvidal at UFC 244.
