We’re approaching two whole months without Premier League football and, quite frankly, we’re seriously missing it.Right now, the season would be reaching its climax and we should be captivated by Liverpool’s quest to smash the point record, the race for European places and the relegation battle.Instead, we’re forced to look back at previous seasons for our Premier League fix.But what was happening on this day - April 27 - in previous years?Well, this date is actually the six year anniversary of one of the most famous moments in Premier League history.Look away now, Liverpool fans. Because six years ago today, Steven Gerrard slipped against Chelsea and cost his side the Premier League title.In the third from last game of the season, Brendan Rodgers’ side were on a 16-match unbeaten streak, winning 11 in a row. They had recently beaten main title rivals Manchester City 3-2 to put themselves in a commanding position. After that match, captain Steven Gerrard got his Liverpool teammates in a huddle and took them “This does not f*cking slip now!"
After then going to beat Norwich, they were five points clear and just needed seven points from their final three matches: Chelsea (H), Crystal Palace (A) and Newcastle (H).
However, Jose Mourinho’s side rocked up to Anfield to spoil the party.
The Portuguese manager made plenty of changes to his side as they concentrated on their Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid.
With a weakened side, their game plan was to simply waste time from the first whistle to frustrate the anxious Liverpool.
But on the stroke of half-time, Mamadou Sakho played the ball to Steven Gerrard inside his own half. The skipper - who had taken painkilling injections in his back to play the game - miscontrolled the ball, panicked and slipped allowing Demba Ba to pounce. The former Newcastle striker went clear and slotted the ball past Simon Mignolet at the Kop End.
Disaster.
Gerrard desperately tried to make amends in the second-half with potshots from distance but Chelsea held firm before scoring a second in injury-time from Willian.
The loss meant that if Man City were to win their remaining matches, they would win the title due to their superior goal difference. They did just that, meaning that Liverpool’s three-goal collapse against Crystal Palace meant very little in the end.
Gerrard has since spoken about his slip in his autobiography ‘My Story.’
"I sat in the back of the car and felt the tears rolling down my face. I hadn't cried for years but, on the way home, I couldn't stop. The tears kept coming," Gerrard wrote. "I can't even tell you if the streets were thick with traffic or as empty as I was on the inside. It was killing me.
"I felt numb, like I had lost someone in my family. It was as if my whole quarter of a century at this football club poured out of me. I did not even try to stem the silent tears as the events of the afternoon played over and over again in my head."
But six years later, rival fans still very much enjoy mocking Gerrard and Liverpool by singing:
“Steve Gerrard, Gerrard,
He slipped on his f*cking arse,
He gave it to Demba Ba,
Steve Gerrard, Gerrard.”
And Liverpool still haven’t won the league…
