France Football have named Lev Yashin the greatest goalkeeper of all-time.

The French publication, who organise the annual Ballon d’Or, ranked the top 10 ‘keepers in the history of the game.

Yashin came out on top following an illustrious career for Dynamo Moscow and the USSR.

Also featured on the list are Italian legend Gianluigi Buffon, England’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks and Germany star Manuel Neuer.

Yashin takes top spot, though, after becoming the only ‘keeper in history to win the Ballon d’Or.

Check out the top 10.

10. Peter Shilton

Shilton played an extraordinary 1,390 professional games from 1966 to 1997, which is a record for most competitive appearances by an individual.

9. Edwin van der Sar

The fact that Dutch icon Van der Sar was named Best European Goalkeeper in 1995 and 2009 shows the longevity of his career at the top.

8. Iker Casillas

Casillas was Spain’s No.1 for their remarkable period of dominance between 2008 and 2012.

He also won five La Liga titles and three Champions League trophies with Real Madrid.

7. Sepp Maier

German shot-stopper Maier spent his entire career with Bayern Munich, making 536 appearances for the Bavarians.

He won the World Cup with his country and was a part of the Bayern side that won three consecutive European Cups in the 1970s.

6. Peter Schmeichel

Schmeichel won titles in Denmark, England and Portugal.

Few were as imposing as the Dane, who captained Manchester United to the Treble in 1999.

5. Manuel Neuer

Neuer revolutionised his position with his sweeper-keeper approach.

The German was named IFFHS World’s Best Goalkeeper in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

4. Gianluigi Buffon

Arguably the finest goalkeeper of the 21st century, Buffon’s lengthy career has seen him triumph with Italy and Juventus.

He holds many records including most Italy appearances (176) and the longest streak without conceding in Serie A history (974 minutes).

3. Dino Zoff

Zoff became the oldest player to win the World Cup in 1982 when he captained Italy to success at the age of 40 years, 4 months and 13 days.

He clocked 112 appearances for his country and won six Serie A titles with Juventus.

2. Gordon Banks

FIFA named Banks their Goalkeeper of the Year six years in a row between 1966 and 1971.

He’s responsible for perhaps the greatest save of all-time, denying Brazilian Pele with a stunning dive at the 1970 World Cup.

1. Lev Yashin

Yashin, nicknamed the ‘Black Spider’ due to his distinctive all-black outfit, is the only goalkeeper in history to win the coveted Ballon d’Or.

He only ever played for Dynamo Moscow and the USSR, helping to change the way a goalkeeper is viewed by commanding his defenders and coming off his line when he sensed danger.

“Lev Yashin was first-class, a real super goalkeeper,” Banks told BBC Sport of Yashin. “His positional play was excellent, but everything he did was top-class.

“He was the model for goalkeeping for the next 10 to 15 years, without a doubt.

“I visualised myself doing some of the things he was doing, even though I was already playing in the top division I used to learn from him."

See for yourself just how good he was.

Ten outstanding goalkeepers.

We’d argue the case for Buffon to be ahead of Zoff. Buffon has broken many records that Zoff set for Italy and Juventus and he’s enjoyed a longer and more successful career.

It’s tough to pick many current ‘keepers who could actually crack that top 10.

Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak, perhaps?

Besides him, there aren’t many who you’d think stand a chance of getting in.

David de Gea has declined in recent years. Alisson Becker could do with a major international trophy. Marc-Andre ter Stegen is good but perhaps not top-10-of-all-time-good.

Where goalkeepers are concerned, it seems we’ve already had the golden age.
