It seems pretty certain now that Floyd Mayweather is retired from competitive boxing action, but that hasn’t stopped him from once again whipping up a storm of rumours by taking a shot at Conor McGregor during training.
Mayweather’s defeated the Irishman in McGregor’s first professional boxing match of his career, solidifying his record at 50-0-0, and retired for a second time.
Since then, Mayweather has fought again in a demolishing of Japanese boxer Tenshin Nasukawa on New Year’s Eve; but it was hardly what you would call a ‘fight.’
However, there has been talk of Floyd getting back into the ring ever since, and McGregor is rumoured to be very high on the list of opponents which Mayweather might go up against, should he return once again.
In an Instagram Live video of a recent training session, Mayweather called out McGregor, commenting that Conor, ‘Didn’t want this.’ He continues to speak but it’s hard to tell exactly what he’s saying from the clip.
Unfortunately, it seems that ‘Money’ isn’t sticking to social distancing rules so that he can continue to train, though his team can be seen wearing masks so at least they’re taking some precautions.
At the end of 2019, Mayweather confirmed that he could fight again and that he was working with UFC president Dana White to sort out a comeback, but it seems that his plans may now have changed once again.
Mayweather was recently hit with a wave of bad news, after his uncle and trainer, Roger died last month at the age of just 59, with Floyd suggesting that his priorities should now lie elsewhere.
On a previous Instagram Live, Floyd said: “This is my first day working with my 14-year-old nephew, and my second time doing mitt work.
“As many of you know, I’ve had incredible trainers which included my dad and uncle. Due to the recent passing of my Uncle Roger, I’ve felt inspired to help those around me the same way they have been there for me throughout my boxing career.”
So it looks like, for the moment at least, Mayweather is focusing on helping others to get into the ring, rather than himself.
McGregor has spoken about entering the boxing ring once again at the beginning of 2020 in an interview with Ariel Helwani, ahead of his UFC 246 fight against Donald Cerrone.
However, after coming out with a win, it’s likely that the ‘Notorious’ will be looking to collect another title in MMA before making the move to boxing for a second time.
