Sadio Mane has been one of the key men in helping build Liverpool into title challengers under Jurgen Klopp.

The Senegalese winger was snapped up the German manager less than a year into his reign, signing from Southampton in the summer of 2016 for a cool £36m.

Ever since, Mane has been on fire for the Reds and these days he is widely recognised as arguably the best winger in world football.

His goals helped Liverpool win their sixth European Cup last season, while 14 goals and nine assists in 26 Premier League games this campaign have been pivotal to the Reds' magnificent 2019/20.

But just short of four years ago when Mane was on the cusp of signing for Liverpool, fans of the club were not exactly thrilled about acquiring a player who many viewed as 'inconsistent'.

Twitter use Jay Pearson has compiled a thread of comments on Reddit from Liverpool supporters discussing Mane's signing and reading them back now is just brilliant.

'I don't see progress?' What about now then mate?

One fan believed it to be a 'terrible signing' and a 'typical Liverpool one'...

Another used Henrik Mkhitaryan's move to Manchester United to dig out Liverpool's pursuit of Mane. Hindsight is wonderful, isn't it?

'Can't see him living up to the price tag'. Yeah, he's only worth around £150-200m these days...

This user was 'disillusioned with the transfer policy'. Wonder if they think the same now?

Another fan jealous of business conducted by Liverpool's rivals that summer.

'If he was that great then we would be fighting off top clubs for him'. The rest of the world's elite should have been fighting tooth and nail!

Possibly the best one saved for last. 'I can already hear the Manchester United fans chanting "Klopp the Flopp"' - just perfect.

Sometimes, it really is best to keep you footballing opinions to yourself...
