Let us take you back to 2008.

In particular, let’s take you back on this exact day back in 2008. April 29.

Now for most people, they won’t immediately know what this date signifies, but hardcore gamers out there may just remember why April 29, 2008 is such a significant date.

The reason why it’s so memorable? Well Grand Theft Auto IV was released worldwide.

Yes that’s right, one of the best games in history dropped around the world on this day and is now celebrating its 12th birthday. If that doesn’t make you feel old right now, then you are very lucky.

Grand Theft Auto was the sixth entry in the main GTA series, 11th entry in the entire history of GTA, but it was the first since Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which was released back in 2004.

That’s right, us GTA lovers had to wait an astonishing four years to get our dose of a new game!

Although with hindsight, that was actually not that long at all, because after GTA IV, we had to wait until 2013 to get the next version, which was GTA V.

So just how well did GTA IV do in terms of success? Pretty damn well as expected.

Within just 24 hours of its release, GTA IV had sold around a staggering 3.6 million copies, which equated to approximately $310 million in revenue.

Imagine seeing your game make that much money in the space of a day! Mind-blowing.

After a week it generated more than $500 million in worldwide revenue, and then after a month the game had sold over 8.5 million copies.

Truly staggering numbers and it just goes to show how popular the franchise is.

If you didn’t think the numbers alone sounded impressive, how about the fact the game broke not one, not two, but THREE Guinness World Records.

Highest grossing video game in 24 hours, highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours, and fastest-selling video game in 24 hours.

Grand Theft Auto IV was a hit. A big hit.

Now, we look back at the game with fondness. It doesn’t seem real that 12 years ago we were celebrating its release, but here we are.

Why not celebrate the anniversary of the game by dusting down your copy and loading it up on your console!

You’re in lockdown, what else is there to do?
