Third of football fans would sacrifice the Premier League season to see Liverpool denied title

If the 2019/20 season resumes then Liverpool are all-but-certain to win the title.

Before the coronavirus suspension brought a halt to the campaign, the Reds were just two wins away from being crowned champions for the first time since 1990.

There are plans to see out the remaining Premier League fixtures and not go the way of France’s Ligue 1, which has ended all matches.

However, there are logistical hurdles and concerns for players’ safety. Several measures could be introduced, including bans on spitting, no holding at corners and sterilised footballs.

But is it really what fans want? If it means that Liverpool miss out on the title, many are ready to end the season completely.

Paddy Power surveyed fans and found that 31 per cent would happily see the season axed – regardless of what that meant for their own clubs’ fortunes – if it meant Liverpool were denied their first ever Premier League title.

Interestingly enough, fans of London clubs were more keen to see Liverpool denied the title. Well over 40 per cent of Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham supporters called for Jurgen Klopp’s team to be denied the trophy.

The survey, the results of which are provided by the Evening Standard, also found that more than half of supporters back plans to finish the season behind closed doors, with only a quarter preferring a null-and-void conclusion.

The third-most popular choice was ending the season with the league table as it stands, which collected 13 per cent of votes. Playoffs or points-per-game received just 5 per cent each.

More than three-quarters of fans were in favour of scrapping next season’s League Cup if necessary to ensure the 2020/21 league season can be played.

And the fact that 58 per cent of Arsenal fans and 65 per cent of Chelsea supporters want to see this year’s FA Cup called off, despite both teams being in the quarter-finals, shows the decreased status of the cup competition.
