On his podcast this week, Peter Crouch discussed how the word ’sh*thouse’ has changed in recent times.

The retired Premier League striker made the point that it used to be an insult; a way of describing a footballer who would pull out of tackles, for example.

But now it’s used almost as a term of endearment to describe a player who gets under the skin of opponents.

These days, football fans love a sh*thouse - especially if they play for their club.

And one of our favourite new Twitter accounts is all about football sh*thousery, featuring some classic moments.

@FootyRustling - which is followed by the aforementioned Peter Crouch - already boasts over 75,000 followers since it was created in February.

It’s full of absolute gold - and we thought we’d pick out some of our favourites moments for your viewing pleasure.

Steven Taylor copies the goalkeeper

Steven Taylor is a classic Premier League sh*thouse.

Here we see the former Newcastle United defender mirroring Asmir Begovic in an attempt to distract the Stoke City goalkeeper.

It clearly worked because Yohan Cabaye scored from the free-kick.

Jose Mourinho’s three-finger celebration

According to Jose Mourinho, Manchester United won the treble in 2016-17: the League Cup, the Europa League and the Community Shield.

Cristiano Ronaldo v Chelsea fans

Cristiano Ronaldo made sure he had the last laugh after Chelsea fans mocked him following a mistake in the warm-up.

Federico Valverde’s red card v Atletico

Federico Valverde became an instant Real Madrid hero following one of the most cynical red card tackles you’ll ever see in the Spanish Super Cup final back in January.

With just five minutes left on the clock, Alvaro Morata had a golden opportunity to win the trophy for Atleti, only to be thwarted by Valverde.

Real Madrid went on to win the match on penalties, while Valverde was ironically named Man of the Match.

Emmanuel Adebayor’s celebration v Arsenal

We couldn’t talk about football sh*thousery without mentioning Emmanuel Adebayor.

The Togolese striker produced one of the most iconic Premier League celebrations after scoring for Manchester City against his former employers, Arsenal.

Per Mertesacker’s death stare

We would have been terrified if Per Mertesacker looked at us like he looked at this fan.

This cheeky Crystal Palace fan

Now that’s how you celebrate after scoring a penalty!

This young Crystal Palace fan did his best impression of Adebayor. Fair play to the Norwich fans for clapping him.

Two reducers on a Celtic player

Never mind a red card, these players were lucky to avoid a jail sentence.

John Terry making a Tottenham fan flinch

Football fans all reckon they’re tough when they’re surrounded by their mates, until players threaten to hit back…

Wayne Rooney’s shirt-swap offer is rejected

Wayne Rooney equalled Sir Bobby Charlton’s Manchester United goalscoring record in January 2017 after finding the net against Reading - but his attempts to swap shirts with former Manchester City academy product George Evans after the match ended in surprise failure.

Jens Lehmann time wasting

You have to respect this blatantly obvious time wasting from Mad Jens.

Bundesliga goalkeeper deliberately messes up penalty spot

Augsburg goalkeeper Marwin Hitz cemented his place in football sh*thousery folklore by deliberately messing up the penalty spot during a Bundesliga match against Cologne in December 2015.

Anthony Modeste slipped while taking the spot-kick and watched on in horror as Hitz produced the save.

Neil Warnock mouthing off

This is just superb. Neil Warnock at his brilliant best.

Roy Keane: 'He didn’t have the baby'

When asked whether Robbie Keane would be available to face Germany in October 2015, Republic of Ireland assistant manager Roy Keane gave a typically blunt response to the media.

“Yes, why wouldn’t he be?” a puzzled Keane replied. “He didn’t have the baby. Unless he’s breastfeeding he should be all right.”

Alexis Sanchez attempts to stop throw

This was still better than anything he did while playing for Manchester United.

Nani taking the p*** v Arsenal

4-0 up and showboating - no wonder Arsenal’s players were fuming with Nani.

Frank Lampard v Stoke fans

Stoke fans decided to insult Frank Lampard as he warmed up in front of them - but it was the Chelsea legend, who was playing for Manchester City at the time, who had the last laugh.

Just as they were calling him a “w***er”, City went and scored. Perfect.

Classic Chelsea mascot v Gerrard

Who can forget this cheeky little chap, who became a star after doing this to Steven Gerrard…

Fan throws the ball away

And we’ll end with this fan, who showed why football sh*thousery will always be funny.
