This week, the first major European league season fell victim to the coronavirus pandemic.

France’s Ligue 1 announced they wouldn’t attempt to restart the 2019/20 campaign and revealed they would be settling the season based on a ‘points-per-game’ system.

Paris Saint-Germain were crowned champions, while Amiens and Toulouse will be relegated.

It had Premier League fans wondering whether the English league will follow suit.

However, England’s top tier remain insistent they can finish the current campaign one way or another.

Reports of ‘Project Restart’ have emerged which involve behind-closed-doors matches and comprehensive testing for the players.

Fans would obviously love to be able to watch football in any capacity again - but is it fair on the players?

Regardless of how much they get paid, surely it isn’t right to use them as 'guinea-pigs' to entertain the public during lockdown.

And one of the Premier League’s biggest players, Sergio Aguero, has admitted that he - and the “majority” of players - are fearful of returning to football too soon.

“The majority of players are scared because they have family, they have children, they have babies, parents,” Aguero revealed.

It does scare me but I have just been here with my girlfriend, I haven’t had contact with other people and they say that to contract the disease is very rare and difficult but they say that there are people who have it, and they don’t have symptoms and they can infect you, that’s why I’ve stayed at home.

“You can be infected and you don’t know anything about it.”

Aguero’s Manchester City are yet to start training again but the Argentine believes it will be very strange when they do eventually return.

“When we go back, I imagine that we will be very tense,” Aguero added.

“We will be very careful and the moment someone feels ill, you will think: ‘What’s gone on there’. I hope there is a vaccine so all this ends.”

As much as we’re all desperate for Premier League football to return, surely the health of the players must be taken into account.
