Ubisoft’s latest addition to the Assassin’s Creed saga, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, is set to feature maps of ancient England and Norway for the first time, according to VG247.

The game’s trailer was revealed earlier this week, and you can watch it here.

The story is based on the Viking Age, focusing particularly on a clan of Vikings aiming to find a new home in ancient England. Players will control clan leader Eivor, who aims to conquer parts of England for his people.

The game is set to feature the icy coastline of Norway, which is where the Vikings originate from, as well as four historic Kingdoms of England. These are Wessex, Mercia, Northumbria and East Anglia, all of which fight back against the Viking invasion, much like in the original tales.

The reveal trailer focuses largely on Alfred the Great, king of Wessex at the time of the invasion. Ubisoft creative director Ashraf Ismail said: “[King Alfred] specifically is known for being one of the most staunch opponents of the Viking invasion. He was the strongest of the kings. He was able to push them back a time and deal with them, whereas the other kings would crumble under the onslaught of the Danes and Norse.”

With the four Kingdoms of England and parts of Norway featured, Valhalla could become the biggest open world in the Assassin’s Creed series if rumours are true.

Players will be let loose on large parts of England, involving huge battles and plenty of looting.

This could help to make Valhalla one of the most successful games in the series, following the success of Black Flag (2013) and Assassin’s Creed III (2012), among others.

There’s no specific launch date yet, but Ubisoft have revealed the game will be released ‘Holiday 2020’, leaving fans wondering when exactly this may be.

The sheer size of the open world in Valhalla could help to make it one of the best and most successful games of 2020.
