It's exactly one year to the day since Barcelona completely imploded at Anfield. The Blaugrana were dreaming of their first Champions League title in four years after winning the first leg of their semi-final against Liverpool 3-0 courtesy of a masterclass from Lionel Messi. But the happy memories of Messi's glorious free-kick were quickly dispelled during the return leg with Liverpool striking early on courtesy of Divock Origi. There was always a faint hope that Liverpool would be able to overturn the deficit considering Barca had bottled a 4-1 advantage against AS Roma in the quarter-finals just one season prior. So, it must have been a crippling case of deja vu for the visitors when Georginio Wijnaldum scored a quick-fire double off the bench to draw the tie level.

Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona

Then, in one of the most iconic moments in recent Champions League history, Trent Alexander-Arnold took an ingenious quick corner that Origi duly converted to complete the comeback.

To blow two comfortable leads in Europe two seasons in a row was visibly gutting for the Barcelona players, who sheepishly exited the pitch as all four sides of Anfield rejoiced around them.

Ordinarily, that would be the last time fans would get to see Ernesto Valverde's squad until their next game in Spain, give or take footage of them shuffling through the mixed zone and on to the coach.

Barca's dressing room footage

But, oh no, the schadenfreude was turned up to 11 for the fact Barcelona were participating in a documentary called ‘Matchday’ that followed them during the 2018/19 season.

Episode seven of the series - titled ‘The eighteen-day storm’ - focused on the collapse at Liverpool and footage of the Barca players in the Anfield dressing rooms quickly spread on social media.

And one year on, the clips of players like Sergio Busquets and Ivan Rakitic looking shellshocked continue to bring a rye smile to supporters of Liverpool, Real Madrid and countless others.

There's a certain eeriness with which the players are all sat in silence contemplating exactly what had happened to them.

Shakira reacts to the equaliser

There's even footage of Gerard Pique's wife Shakira shouting "No, I can't believe it! No!" alongside her children at home as Wijnaldum makes it 3-3.

Alba's breakdown at half-time

Then, how can we forget Jordi Alba crying at half-time? The Spanish full-back was visibly emotional with his head down in a towel when Valverde asked if he was ok and went over to comfort him.

Messi's pre-match speech

Or Messi's speech to the players before the game which couldn't be more foreboding...

“Come on people. We are going to take a step forward,” Messi says. “We can’t waste this opportunity, OK?

“Give everything, now that we are here. We have to start strong. Remember, Rome was our fault. Nobody else’s. We mustn’t let the same thing happen. It was our fault and nobody else’s."

It really was a calamity before the game, during half-time and after the match. You couldn't write it.
