Man Utd fan defends Nemanja Vidic with video of Virgil van Dijk's mistakes

RB Salzburg v Liverpool FC: Group E - UEFA Champions League

Nemanja Vidic vs Virgil van Dijk has become one of the biggest talking points in football recently.

Despite the fact it’s been over a month since a ball was kicked in the Premier League, the debate between Manchester United and Liverpool fans has been going strong across social media.

World Cup winner and former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf seems to be the source of the argument, opining that Van Dijk was a more complete defender than Vidic in late March.

“I would go for Van Dijk. I think he’s more complete,” Leboeuf told ESPN FC. “I loved Vidic, because I think he was a dog, and a fantastic defender.

“But Van Dijk can lead the team and has range. I don’t think Vidic was capable of doing that. Hats off to Vidic, though.”

Van Dijk vs Vidic debate

Since then, a number of ex-teammates and pundits have piled in on the conversation, while our own GIVEMESPORT poll found that 54% of fans would rather have Vidic than Van Dijk.

But that hasn’t stopped supporters from coming up with unique ways to try and demonstrate that their preferred defender was better than the other.

We’ve seen everything from Twitter threads, statistical comparisons to compilation videos, but the latest trend seems to have targeted Vidic in particular.

Video of Van Dijk mistakes

Last month, the Serbian’s worst moments in a United shirt were stitched together in one montage and just this week, a series of tweets claimed he was: ‘the most overrated defender in PL history’.

It goes without saying that these sorts of videos aren’t the most accurate, essentially because even the best defenders of all time can be made to look bad if you only take their rare mistakes.

So, bearing that in mind, United fan and Twitter user @UtdChe decided to fire back at the ‘stupid videos about Vidic’ by highlighting an equivalent montage but this time of Van Dijk.

In reference to the fact Van Dijk allegedly went the whole of last season without being dribbled past, the video shows examples of when forwards have simply breezed past him – check it out:

Vidic isn’t alone in being ‘error-prone’ then…

Ok, so, it goes without saying that the Van Dijk compilation is far less than damning than the ones made on Vidic, but the sample size is so much smaller.

Vidic played a monumental 300 games in the famous red jersey, while Van Dijk has barely passed a third of that total and has only played one full season on Merseyside.

As a result, it’s hard to compare the two defenders by their raw total of mistakes, though it must be conceded that Vidic was more susceptible to losing his head and attracting red cards.

But until we can asses a Van Dijk that has played more than 300 games for Liverpool, we’ll still be some way short of settling the titanic debate with mistake compilations alone.
