Fernandes’ inclusion has caused a real stir.

The Portuguese midfielder only made five appearances in the league before the season was suspended due to coronavirus.

The BBC listed all of the players who nearly made the team.

Sheffield United goalkeeper Dean Henderson received 37% of votes but that wasn’t enough to get in ahead of Alisson (52%).

In defence, Manchester United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire, Leicester’s Ben Chilwell and Wolves’ Conor Coady missed out.

Those who missed out on a spot in midfield include Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish, Wolves’ Adama Traore, Leicester’s James Maddison and Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum.

Leicester's Jamie Vardy is the top scorer in the league this season but he didn't make it into the XI.

Neither did Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Liverpool's Roberto Firmino and Manchester City's Raheem Sterling.

The season has, of course, been suspended as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

We saw some terrific displays from certain individuals, including Mane, Van Dijk and De Bruyne.

And Henderson also deserves a place in the Team of the Season after a fantastic season for Liverpool.
