The debate between Steven Gerrard, Paul Scholes and Frank Lampard will rage on forever.

The three former Premier League midfielders were all masters of their craft and enjoyed superb careers at the very top.

The fact that they all did it for three rival teams only adds to the debate.

And it’s such a fascinating argument that even professional players have had their say.

“Lampard was pretty amazing, Scholes the classic. But I’ll have Gerrard,” former AC Milan midfielder Kaka told SPORTbible.

Another player to choose Gerrard is Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha, while Thierry Henry opted for Scholes.

However, a detailed Twitter thread may provide us with the definitive answer.

Posted by @K56100212K, the thread includes stats, trophies, individual accolades and more to offer a pretty irrefutable conclusion.

At the end of it all, @K56100212K concluded that Gerrard was the best player, followed by Lampard.

Scholes, however, apparently only became a ‘Legend’ when he retired.

“But looking at numbers, ratings, individual accolades, why on earth is Paul Scholes even in this debate?” the fan writes.

That’s a pretty scathing analysis of a player who won 11 Premier League titles with Manchester United.

The knock on Gerrard, of course, is his failure to win the title with Liverpool.

However, when the data is explored his quality is clear to see.

In the league, he ranked ahead of Scholes and Lampard in per game stats for blocks, interceptions, tackles, tackles won, clearances, headed clearances and aerial battles.

His ability to lift Liverpool to another level, often at the most crucial times, was so pivotal in their success in the 2000s.

Gerrard was also nominated for the Ballon d’Or award six times, collecting 220 votes. Lampard was nominated five times and had 169 total votes.

Scholes was also nominated five times but didn’t receive a single vote.
