UFC 249 is now in the record books and it will forever read that Justin Gaethje defeated Tony Ferguson via stoppage in the fifth and final round.
Despite being the underdog stepping into the Octagon on May 9, the challenger for the interim lightweight title didn't look out of place whatsoever.
In fact, he didn't even look like he was the underdog!
From the very first bell Gaethje was on the attack and was visibly producing the better shots. However, although he was under serious pressure right from the get go, Ferguson took the majority of the blows very, very well. He proved that his chin is made of pure steel.
As the rounds went by, UFC fans were expecting Ferguson to launch an attack of his own, but it simply never came. Yes, he wobbled and even floored the challenger late on in the second with a brutal uppercut, but that was truly it. That's all the attack he really had.
Gaethje, on the other hand, was launching attacks on the regular, and was visibly putting himself on the front foot and taking the attack to Ferguson.
Serious punches were thrown and landed, yet the champ would not go down. He would wobble, but he wouldn't go down.
Eventually, in the fifth, Ferguson simply couldn't defend himself anymore, and after wobbling around the Octagon for a bit, the referee intervened and called off the bout. The right decision.
Now, a compilation video has emerged of the highlights, and it shows just how much punishment Ferguson took inside the five rounds.
In the end, it left a lot of UFC fans saying that Ferguson looked like he had just gone five rounds with... well, Ferguson.
He usually leaves people looking battered, NOT the other way around.
However, May 9 and UFC 249 he finally met his match, and his name is Justin Gaethje.
