May 13, 2012 is a date that means so much to Manchester City.It is, of course, the date in which they sealed their first Premier League title, and in such dramatic circumstances, too.Entering the final day of the 2011/12 season, Roberto Mancini’s side led close rivals Manchester United on goal difference as they looked to end the Red Devils’ dominance over the city.Both teams even had identical records: 27 wins, five draws, five defeats.Man United would need a miracle, though, requiring relegation-threatened Queens Park Rangers to cause a major upset at the Etihad Stadium to stand a chance of winning the title.And, strangely enough, that’s exactly what QPR were on course to do.They led 2-1 entering second-half injury-time and, with Sir Alex Ferguson’s team winning at Sunderland, it looked like being United’s day.But City continued to huff and puff and they eventually blew QPR’s wall down.Edin Dzeko made it 2-2 in the 92nd minute and there was enough time for Sergio Aguero to seal the comeback with a stunning last-gasp winner.
The Argentinian fired home from close range after being teed up by Mario Balotelli to send the home crowd into ecstasy.
The moment was made all the more iconic by Martin Tyler’s ‘AGUEROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO’ on commentary.
You couldn’t have written a better script.
Even if you forget about the importance of the match, it was a thriller.
QPR’s Joey Barton completely lost his head in the second half, earning a red card following a clash with Carlos Tevez which ended with him kicking Sergio Aguero and attempting to headbutt Vincent Kompany.
The ugly incident earned Barton a 12-match ban.
“I swear you'll never see anything like this ever again,” Tyler said on commentary.
He was right.
