Who is the best defender in world football?

The question is certainly open to debate but most fans would probably say Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutchman came incredibly close to winning last year’s Ballon d’Or, narrowly missing out to Lionel Messi who claimed the award for a record sixth time.

Van Dijk had to settle for a Champions League winners’ medal.

The way he’s transformed Liverpool’s fortunes since his £75 million move from Southampton has seen him leapfrog the likes of Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane, Gerard Pique and Kalidou Koulibaly to be regarded the best centre-back in the game.

He might be the best but he’s no longer the most expensive defender in the world.

That’s because Manchester United’s £80 million purchase of Harry Maguire last summer eclipsed that.

While Maguire has performed well in his debut season and has already inherited the club’s captaincy, you simply can’t compare him to Van Dijk right now.

And a video has emerged that exploits Maguire’s weakness in a rather hilarious - but harsh - compilation.

To the soundtrack of TV programme ‘You’ve Been Framed’ the two-minute video shows a host of mistakes from Maguire in a United shirt.

The tweet is captioned: “Harry Maguire: Best and most expensive defender in the world. Miles above Van Dijk.”

Of course, it’s unfair to judge a player solely based on a short two-minute video highlighting his mistakes.

But one thing is for sure, it would be a bit more difficult to make a similar video of Van Dijk’s mistakes - because they are few and far between.
