Cristiano Ronaldo's greatest assists have been compiled in viral Twitter video

Cristiano Ronaldo is always compared unfavourably to Lionel Messi in the assists department.

It often feels as though the two footballing legends are hotly debated in just about every data-set and statistic imaginable, only Messi seems to get a free pass when it comes to assists.

In fairness, it’s not an unfounded situation with Messi boasting a career tally of 292 assists for club and country that overwhelms Ronaldo‘s total of 251 in over 100 fewer games.

However, the tragedy of that is Ronaldo’s assists are so often forgotten and just because Messi is better, it doesn’t mean that the Portuguese isn’t one of the best in the world at teeing up goals.

Lest we forget that Ronaldo has turned provider for more goals than Barcelona legends Andres Iniesta and Xavi, who collected 179 and 236 assists respectively.

Ronaldo’s underrated creativity

The odd example has led some fans to presume that Ronaldo is a completely selfish forward, but his combination play with fellow forwards is a strong reminder of his grounding as a winger.

Perhaps the most famous example is Ronaldo’s attacking chemistry with Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale, who all turned provider for one another on a regular basis during their primes.

The Portuguese is just as capable of smashing in full-throttle crosses as he is firing shots towards goal and slotting balls across the area as he is at finding the bottom corner.

Video of Ronaldo’s playmaking

But there’s more to proving a point than giving case studies and statistics, so why not appreciate Ronaldo’s creativity with your own two eyes by checking out the video evidence.

Twitter user @CristianoRole might have a somewhat biased username, but they’re also capable of drawing up fantastic edits and their latest video focused on Ronaldo’s penchant for an assist.

Titled: ‘Just a reminder that Cristiano Ronaldo is the most underrated playmaker of this generation’, the two-minute video has racked up 4,000 ‘likes’ and 950 retweets at the time of writing.

Have a load of that.

Before Ronaldo reverted into more of a poaching number nine in his latter years at the Bernabeu, his position on the left-hand side meant that he had opportunities aplenty to cross the ball.

And bearing in mind that Benzema is one of the most underrated strikers in the sport, it’s inevitable that many of Ronaldo’s crosses and through balls were rounded off with a deadly finish into the net.

So, does this mean Ronaldo is on Messi’s level in terms of assists? Absolutely not, but don’t you dare use that as a reason to underrate his skills in that department. Fair play, Cristiano.
