N’Golo Kante has shown in the past few years that he’s one of the best defensive midfielders in the world.
The Frenchman rose to prominence when he signed for Leicester City in 2015.
The Foxes were favourites to go down that season, but Kante miraculously helped them to the Premier League title.
Kante started 37 times and was named in the PFA Team of the Year.
He was rewarded that summer with a £32m move to Chelsea.
Kante hit the ground running with the Blues and was named PFA Players’ Player of the Year as Chelsea won the Premier League title.
He would enjoy yet more success the following year as he helped France win the 2018 World Cup.
Now 29, Kante has had a frustrating season, having endured numerous injuries in the past few months.
Nevertheless, he remains one of the best players in his position.
Kante shares numerous similarities to former Chelsea and France midfield, Claude Makelele.
But is Kante better than a prime Makelele?
We asked football fans that very question over on our Facebook page.
The question drew great debate with 142k people voting and it was Kante who came out on top, acquiring 64% of the vote.
Interesting. Makelele was a great player in his day. He thrived for Real Madrid, winning two La Liga titles.
He then had great success with Chelsea, winning six major honours in a five season spell.
Makelele was so good that he had a position named after him.
It’s extremely close… but I would agree that Kante is a better player than he was.
Makelele was amazing at what he did. He was one of the best defensive midfielders in the world.
But Kante can do everything that he could do and more. Makelele didn’t have the engine that his compatriot does and wasn’t as quick.
Kante is also better going forward than Makelele was. Both players were incredible, but Kante just has the edge.
