Jordan Henderson is very, very close to lifting the Premier League trophy.The Liverpool captain has enjoyed a brilliant season and, if everything goes to plan, it will culminate in him adding a league winner’s medal to his collection.It would go with his Champions League and Club World Cup medals, both of which were won in the past 12 months.He’s not had a bad year, has he?There might have been a time when the midfielder thought that nutmegging Paul Scholes would be as good as it gets.In 2010, when Henderson was still a Sunderland player, he popped one through Scholes’ legs in a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United.Sunderland even felt compelled to tweet about the moment.“Meanwhile, Henderson schools Scholes with a cheeky nutmeg. Textbook,” they wrote.
The tweet is doing the rounds once again on social media. It’s probably a good thing that Scholes isn’t on Twitter.
Ten years on from that moment and Henderson is on the brink of winning his maiden Premier League title.
It’s not been an easy journey - he was nearly sold to Fulham one year after joining Liverpool - but he’s shown what can be achieved through hard work and persistence.
The midfielder was given the unenviable task of replacing Steven Gerrard as Liverpool’s captain but he’s certainly filled Gerrard’s boots.
Champions League glory came last season and Liverpool also won the Club World Cup last December.
And they were two wins away from winning the league before the season was brought to a halt.
Plans are underway for the season to return - clubs resumed training this week - so it might not be long before we see Henderson’s famous shuffle as he hoists the league trophy.
