The makers of The Inbetweeners have created a brand new comedy series called The First Team, which follows three young footballers at a fictional Premier League side.

The show will air on BBC Two and follows the adventures of Mattie, Jack and Benji, as they face the complicated world of women, money, social media and top flight football.

It’s the first project that writers and directors Iain Morris and Damon Beesley have worked on since The Inbetweeners film in 2014.

If The First Team is anything like it, then we’re in for a treat.

The show will be released on Thursday, May 28.

We. Can't. Wait.

Beesley explained the decision to use footballers in an interview with NME.

"Normally, boys of a certain age are going out and doing stupid stuff all of the time," he said.

"It's about living a different life to everyone else and the sacrifices that these people make. That's what we thought was interesting about footballers.

"There's a perception out there that they're all terrible human beings that are overpaid, lazy and don't know they're born - and actually the reality is not that."

Jake Short, a former Disney child actor, plays Mattie, a US-import recently signed who may not be as good as the chairman first hoped.

“The comedy right away struck me," he said.

“I don’t read a lot of scripts that immediately grab me, but the comedy was all there and very quick.”
