Mauricio Pochettino names his top three players in the Premier League

We haven’t heard much from Mauricio Pochettino since he was sacked from Tottenham back in November.

Just months after leading Spurs to a Champions League final, the Argentine was replaced by Jose Mourinho with his project showing signs of unravelling at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It did nothing to dent his reputation for the incredible job he did in north London and he’ll certainly be remembered fondly by Tottenham fans despite the way it ended.

But this weekend, Poch is everywhere.

This week, he gave a series of interviews to a number of publications. The fact it came in the same week that Newcastle’s takeover was approved by the Premier League is surely a coincidence…

One of the many questions Pochettino was asked was to name his top three players in the Premier League right now. He wasn’t allowed to name one of his former Spurs players, though.

Interestingly, he went for Kevin de Bruyne first, then compatriot Sergio Aguero before throwing in Roberto Firmino.

Liverpool’s Brazilian striker certainly divides opinion among football fans.

Those that recognise his work see him as a pivotal cog in Jurgen Klopp’s side, allowing the likes of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah to flourish with his work-rate, movement and clever hold-up play.

But there are those that look purely at his output. Playing upfront for a side that is 25 points clear at the top of the table, you’d perhaps expect more than eight goals in the league this season – and at least one at Anfield. He’s only bagged 11 in all competitions.

But Firmino is a fantastic player and is obviously appreciated by those in the game.
