England fans will never forget September 1, 2001.The night the Three Lions went to Germany with qualification for the 2002 World Cup on the line. And it looked as though Sven Goran Eriksen’s side would have to start preparing for the dreaded playoffs when Carsten Jancker put Germany ahead after six minutes in Munich. But Michael Owen’s hat-trick and an incredible England performance saw them thrash their enemy 5-1 in their own backyard and, ultimately, go on finish top of the qualification group.Owen obviously made headlines with his hat-trick but the performance of his then Liverpool teammate, Steven Gerrard, was nothing short of sensational. And almost 19 years on, a two-minute video of Gerrard’s display is going viral on Twitter. With the No.4 on his back and playing in a slightly more defensive role, Gerrard pulled the strings during the 78 minutes he was on the pitch.Even early on, he could be seen telling Jancker to go away in no uncertain terms. He meant business.p1e8usokkrcjr18ni99n1uh9dohj.jpgShort passes, long passes, passes to the right, passes to the left, Gerrard ran the show. He also made some incredible tackles to prevent Germany from attacking on numerous occasions. He scored a fantastic half volley on the stroke of half-time to put England 2-1 ahead. In the second half, he won the ball off Michael Ballack to assist Owen with a sublime through ball. But perhaps the moment of the match came when he produced a Cruyff Turn on Liverpool teammate Didi Hammann before deciding to beat him again. This was Gerrard at the very top of his game.

Gerrard finished his career with 114 caps for his country making him the fourth most-capped player in England history, scoring 21 goals.

And it’s performances like that one against Germany that perhaps explains why Scholes had to play some of his England career on the left wing...
