Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes might have all retired years ago but English fans still love to argue who was better.

Liverpool fans will point to how Gerrard led poor Liverpool sides to trophies for many years, Chelsea fans will point to Lampard incredible goalscoring record and Premier League titles, while United fans will point to Scholes’ ridiculous technical ability and his packed trophy cabinet.

Let’s make no mistake, all three were amazing central midfielders.

All three of them offered something a little bit different and it’s a crying shame they never really played in a midfield three for England.

We should really just appreciate them all for the world-class players they are but fans are always trying to prove that one was better than the other two.

And one man that certainly tried doing that was former professional footballer turned boxer Curtis Woodhouse.

He sent a series of tweets that tried to prove that Gerrard was better than Scholes.

It all started when he quote tweeted a video of Gerrard’s incredible highlights for England against Germany back in 2001, to which he wrote: “Best midfielder England has produced in years. Only club rivalry doesn’t allow this to be universally accepted. This lad could do absolutely everything, the complete footballer.”

It led to him backing up his claim in a series of tweets.

When a fan argued that Lampard and Scholes can’t have been in English in reply to his original tweet, Woodhouse replied: “Oh yea they were 100% English, they were also 200% not better all round midfielders than Stevie G.”

Woodhouse then went on to state how Scholes failed to win a Player of the Year award at United during his 19 years, while claiming he had to retire from international football because of Gerrard and Lampard.

“Paul Scholes retired from international football at 29 years of age because he couldn’t get a game in his preferred position of centre midfield. That position was occupied by the great Steven Gerrard and the very good Frank Lampard,” Woodhouse added.

Before going on to write: “He had Keane next to him, Giggs and Beckham either side and Yorke and Cole up top! Oh and Rio and Vidic behind him! Paul Scholes running games is a footballing myth that’s grown and grown since he retired.”

Woodhouse does claim that Scholes failed to make a PFA Team of the Year during his career - but he did on two occasions. Gerrard holds the record of making it a record eight times, though.

As you can imagine, Woodhouse riled plenty of United fans on social media with even Paul Scholes’ son hitting back at him.
