Exactly five years ago today, Steven Gerrard's incredible Liverpool career came to an end in humiliating fashion. On May 24, 2015, Gerrard was named in Liverpool's starting lineup for the very last time against Stoke. But Liverpool were absolutely destroyed at the Britannia Stadium.Mame Biram Diouf scored the opener for the home side after 22 minutes. And then the floodgates opened.Diouf scored again four minutes later to make it 2-0. Jonathan Walters, Charlie Adam and Steven Nzonzi also found the net as Stoke led 5-0 at half-time.Liverpool regrouped after the break, though, and Gerrard's final game did at least have a positive as he raced through and brought one back in the 70th minute. But it was Stoke who got the final say, with former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch netting late on to ensure a 6-1 demolition for Stoke.Watch highlights of the game below:

That wasn't the result that Gerrard deserved after such an incredible career. The result was the definition of embarrassing.

In fact, it was Liverpool's worst defeat in Premier League history. Five years on, it remains their heaviest loss.

Ryan Shawcross started for Stoke in defence that day and he revealed how they reacted at half-time in the changing room.

"My highlights have to be the 6-1 win over Liverpool and the FA Cup semi-final against Bolton in 2011,” he told fans at Knypersley Sports Club, per FourFourTwo.

“We were 5-0 up against Liverpool at half time and when we went back to the dressing room nobody said a word, we just burst out laughing. The manager walked in and didn’t know what to say."

The two sides have had contrasting fortunes since then, though.

Stoke were relegated from the Premier League in 2018 and are now struggling in the Championship.

They were sitting in 17th, three points above the drop zone, before the season was put on hold.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are currently 25 points clear and on the brink of their first Premier League title.
