We’re sure that a number of children will be named after Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. But how about a completely fictional player who isn’t actually a real person? It seems very strange but that’s the plan for Sam Douglas, who intends to name his future child after a Football Manager regen that has starred for him on the simulation game.Regens are regenerated players who take over when today’s actual players have retired. It means you can continue to play the game long into the future. Some develop into world-class players who take over from Messi and Ronaldo as the game’s top stars, and it’s easy to develop an affinity for them. And Sam Douglas has told his partner, Lucy, that he wants to name their future child after one of his own regens.“Sam wants to name our future child after a regen on football manager,” Lucy tweeted, adding a facepalm emoji.

Lucy revealed that the regen’s name is Elkan and that she actually likes it.

Who knows, Sam’s wish could come true.

“To be honest he kept going on about his anger being 20 out of 20 and the fact his name sounded like an Avenger," Lucy told SPORTbible.

"To be fair I quite like it. We named our dog Dion after Dion Dublin so why not carry a trend!"

Brilliant.

According to Lucy, Sam can be considered a Football Manager addict and that results on the game affect his mood.

“He's literally obsessed, it's his life, he plays it constantly," she added.

"You can tell if he's winning from the mood he's in. He's a Cambridge United fan and lost in the League One play-off final twice in a row and he was in the worst mood.

"His greatest achievement was winning the treble with Cambridge. I'm a Hull City fan and he likes to mention when he's playing them, I always say I hope he loses which he's never happy about!"

Sam and Lucy got engaged last August and we wish them well for the future.

Although they’ll be hoping that, unlike the regen, their child doesn’t have 20 out of 20 anger…
