“And Solskjaer has won it!”
Manchester United fans will never forget where they were when Clive Tyldesley shouted those words back in 1999.
The ITV commentator was reacting to the most dramatic Champions League final in history as United scored two injury-time goals to overcome Bayern Munich in Barcelona to seal a historic treble.
It’s 21 years to the day since that incredible night.
Bayern had led since the sixth-minute following Mario Basler’s free-kick.
But Sir Alex Ferguson’s side never gave up.
On came Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
“Can Manchester United score? They always score,” said Tyldesley as Peter Schmeichel came up for a corner in injury-time with United searching for an equaliser.
And they did as Ryan Giggs’ shot was turned in by Sheringham.
Less than 30 seconds after the match kicked-off again, the Red Devils earned another corner. This time Schmeichel stayed put but the result was the same as Sheringham flicked on David Beckham’s corner for Solskjaer to prod home.
Amazing.
Having already claimed the Premier League and FA Cup, United completed an unprecedented treble - something that hasn’t been repeated since.
What made the win even more incredible was the fact they did it without suspended duo Roy Keane and Paul Scholes.
Ferguson dealt with it by playing Beckham in the middle with Nicky Butt, with Jesper Blomqvist on the left and Giggs on the right.
For 90 minutes, United were outclassed by a strong Bayern side. But as we saw all too often with Man Utd under Ferguson, they had this never say die attitude and claimed the Champions League in the most incredible final few minutes.
