On this day 10 years ago, England U17 won the European Championships. At the time, it was just naturally assumed that most of the talented squad would go on to great things. They would be Premier League regulars and make the step up to England’s first-team.It hasn’t quite worked out like that, though. In fact, according to WhoScored, the starting XI that beat Spain in the final have made just 615 collective top-flight appearances in Europe's top-five leagues.

But what has happened to the whole squad 10 years on?

Let’s take a look:

Sam Johnstone

Then: Manchester United

Now: West Brom

Johnstone left United permanently in the summer of 2018 after failing to make a first-team appearance at Old Trafford. He’s only played six times for West Brom this season.

Bruno Pilatos
Then: Middlesbrough

Now: Without a club

Who? From our research, Pilatos signed for Swedish side Ytterhogdal in 2016 but has been without a club for a number of years now.

Luke Garbutt
Then: Everton

Now: Everton (on loan at Ipswich Town)

Now 27, Garbutt has made 12 first-team appearances for Everton and has spent most of his career on loan to football league clubs.

Conor Coady
Then: Liverpool

Now: Wolverhampton Wanderers

Coady failed to make it at Liverpool but is now a Premier League - and Europa League - captain at Wolves. Yet to get a full England cap, though.

Nathaniel Chalobah
Then: Chelsea

Now: Watford

Chalobah joined Watford on a permanent deal in 2017 but has battled with injuries ever since.

Andre Wisdom
Then: Liverpool

Now: Derby County

Twenty-two first-team appearances at Liverpool but Wisdom has now been in the Championship with Derby since 2017 - a club he went on loan to during the 2013/14 campaign.

Will Keane
Then: Manchester United

Now: Ipswich Town

Three appearances at Old Trafford but Keane has spent almost his entire career in the Championship with a variety of loan spell before signing permanently at Hull. He’s now in League One with Ipswich, scoring three goals in 23 games this season.

George Thorne
Then: West Bromwich Albion

Now: Oxford United

Thorne played nine times in the Premier League with West Brom before signing for Derby. His loan to League One Oxford was made permanent in January.

Benik Afobe
Then: Arsenal

Now: Stoke City (on loan at Bristol City)

Afobe has played in the Premier League with Bournemouth but the Championship is where he’s scored most of his goals. He joined Bristol City on loan in August and started with three goals in five matches before an Anterior cruciate ligament injury ruled him out for the rest of the campaign.

Saido Berahino
Then: West Bromwich Albion

Now: Zulte Waregem

Did you know Berahino now plays in Belgium? No, us neither. He once scored 14 Premier League goals in a single campaign for West Brom in 2014/15 but it’s all been a bit downhill since - going two Premier League seasons without scoring for Stoke.

Robert Hall
Then: West Ham United

Now: Oxford United (on loan at Forest Green Rovers)

One Premier League appearance for West Ham during the 2012/13 season but Hall before he left permanently for Bolton and then Oxford. Now in League Two with Forest Green.

Ben Gibson
Then: Middlesbrough

Now: Burnley

Gibson left Middlesbrough for Burnley in a club record £15 million deal in the summer of 2018 but has barely been seen since. He’s played one Premier League match - a 5-1 defeat to Everton in which he scored.

Jack Butland
Then: Birmingham City

Now: Stoke City

Nine senior England caps but Butland only playing in the Championship with Stoke right now.

Thorpe played once in the Premier League for Man Utd but was last seen playing for Indian Super League side ATK, who were then managed by United legend Teddy Sheringham.

Josh McEachran
Then: Chelsea

Now: Birmingham City

Looked to have incredible potential, playing 11 times in the Premier League for Chelsea but was sold to Brentford in 2015. Moved to Birmingham in 2019 on a free transfer.

Ross Barkley
Then: Everton

Now: Chelsea

The player who has achieved the most in the game since that triumph back in 2010. Barkley has played almost 200 times in the Premier League for Everton and now Chelsea, whilst earning 33 England caps.

Connor Wickham
Then: Ipswich Town

Now: Crystal Palace (on loan at Sheffield Wednesday)

Wickham has been in and out of the Premier League during his career having played for Sunderland and Palace in the top-flight. He joined Sheffield Wednesday on a six-month loan deal on 31 January 2020.
