September 7, 1996 was a night where Mike Tyson recorded a monstrous routine victory over Bruce Seldon, as he saw off his opponent in the first round.
However, this unfortunate night would never be remembered for Tyson's dominant performance.
Tyson's devastating hooks reduced the Atlantic City fighter to the canvas on two occasions, with Seldon's feet stumbling after he suffered the second signficant blow. When Tyson was gifted the victory, he marched back to the locker room and was greeted by Tupac Shakur on his journey.
Unfortunately, this was the night that Tupac was fatally shot and later died in hospital.
The Instagram account 'GlovesUpGlobal' has recently shared the footage of Tupac and his compatriot Suge Knight showing their appreciation towards Tyson, with this footage likely being taken just hours before Tupac's death.
Following the fight, Tupac left the MGM Grand with his entourage, but was murdered in a drive-by shooting when his vehicle stopped at a red light at East Flamingo Road and Koval Lane, Las Vegas.
Regarding the tragic night, an emotional Tyson opened up to Real 92.3's Big Boy's Neighbourhood radio show.
“(Tupac) was really happy after the fight,” Tyson said with tears in his eyes. “He came to a press conference with me. We were just talking a bunch of s***. I went home and then he left.
“It’s very difficult to talk about,” Tyson admitted.
For years it was unconfirmed who shot Tupac four times that night, with many allegations being pointed towards New York-rapper Biggie Smalls and his east coast entourage. The rapper was also murdered over a year later.
Eventually, Orlando Anderson emerged as the prime suspect, who belonged to the Compton Crips, a Californian gang.
From the early periods of that decade, Tyson and Tupac shared a friendship as they dominated their respective fields of boxing and rap music.
Speaking about his friend, Tyson tearfully said: “He was just a young kid, and he wanted to be great – and then that happened.”
