Nobody really knows what’s going to happen during this summer’s transfer window.
Major clubs have lost out on millions of pounds in revenue but player values will also have dropped dramatically.
It could be a very quiet summer.
However, one club that is busy making plans for potential signings is Manchester United.
Earlier today, they announced they were extending to loan deal of Odion Ighalo until January 2021.
Miguel Delaney in the Independent produced a report revealing how United’s transfer shortlist includes Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish and Joe Rodon. Meanwhile, RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly are more senior defensive options.
In the “lower priority” group are Wolves’ Raul Jimenez and West Ham United’s Declan Rice.
However, there was one name in the report that caught our eye - Raheem Sterling.
We’ll let Delaney explain…
“More intriguing is one name suddenly high up in priority, and who the analytics department have been working on. That is Raheem Sterling,” Delaney wrote.
“Nobody sees the player as any way likely to go to Manchester United, but some do feel it is a reflection of a relative uncertainty around his future if Manchester City’s Champions League ban is upheld. In other words, if he becomes available, United will go for him."
Sterling to United? Surely not…
If Liverpool fans didn’t dislike Sterling enough for leaving the club for City, imagine if he went and joined United.
Of course, the deal seems incredibly unlikely but the future of City’s star players may depend on whether they can overturn their two-year European ban.
City’s appeal will be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on June 8-10 and the decision may have a big impact on the future of Sterling.
But to Old Trafford? Just imagine.
