Chelsea are plotting a move for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as uncertainty mounts over his future.

Speculation has been building about the Arsenal striker's long-term plans with the Gabon international having just one year remaining on his contract in North London.

Reports had suggested that a new deal had been offered to the striker, but according to ESPN, that is not thought to be the case.

Aubameyang is keen to play at the highest level and with Mikel Arteta's side currently sitting in ninth place in the Premier League table, it seems unlikely that they'll be competing in the Champions League next term.

With uncertainty building, ESPN have reported that Frank Lampard's side could be plotting a sensational move for the striker as they look to add his goalscoring touch to their side.

While the striker will be 31 later this month, it's likely that any move to sign Aubameyang will cost a significant sum, with Arsenal spending £57.4million to bring him to North London in 2018.

But with reports suggesting that talks over a new deal with the Gunners have yet to begin, it could be in Arsenal's best interests to move the striker on, or risk losing him for nothing next summer.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This could be a heartbreaking summer for many Arsenal fans.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is a hugely popular figure in North London due to his impressive goalscoring record since arriving at the club.

There's no question that the Gabon international deserves to be playing in the Champions League, and with the Gunners unlikely to be able to offer him that, it seems that the writing is on the wall.

With his contract due to expire next summer it makes financial sense to move the striker on at the end of the season in order to recoup the sizeable fee that they paid for him in 2018.

That way they can look to rebuild their team accordingly, while allowing such a popular figure to have one last chance at Europe's elite competition.
