Liverpool have been named the UK’s favourite football team in a YouGov poll.

Yes, as well as being champions of Europe and on the cusp of a first league title in 30 years, the Reds are also the most popular team in the UK.

The poll found that the Reds are supported by 8.3 per cent of the population, which puts them ahead of Manchester United (6 per cent) and Chelsea (3.1 per cent).

Liverpool just keep on winning at the moment.

The return of the Premier League this month means that Jurgen Klopp’s side will get the chance to seal the title.

The Premier League trophy would sit alongside the Champions League and Club World Cup trophies at the club.

Their success in recent times has no doubt contributed to their popularity and they are now admired more in the UK than Man United.

And YouGov’s study found that the gap between the two clubs is widening.

Their study took into account the popularity of 40 British and European teams against 16 separate metrics, with the opinion of the British public being tracked every day.

A variety of factors were used, including engagement metrics, brand health, clubs’ management, players, fan culture, traditions and style of play.

So it's hardly surprising that Liverpool have risen to top of the rankings, considering they have one of the most charismatic managers in the league, have a passionate fanbase and have been extremely successful over the past few seasons.

Man City are fourth in the top 10 rankings, while Wolves, Newcastle United and Everton also feature.
