For months, it’s seemed as though Liverpool had a free run at Timo Werner - a player they have been tracking for years. The RB Leipzig striker is having a fantastic 2019/20 season, scoring 25 goals in 29 Bundesliga appearances. And with his release clause dropping to £50 million this summer, it seemed as though the champions-elect would trigger that and strengthen their incredible side even further. However, while Werner will be heading to the Premier League at the end of the season, it will be to Stamford Bridge and Chelsea. That’s because reports broke on Thursday evening that Werner has agreed to move to Chelsea after they agreed to pay his release clause.

So why aren’t Liverpool signing him after all of their interest?

Well, reliable journalist Jan Aage Fjortoft revealed that it’s due to financial reasons.

It seems strange that the European champions and future Premier League champions - who didn’t sign anyone last summer - can’t afford to pay £50 million for a player they desperately wanted.

Liverpool journalist, James Pearce, confirmed the bad news for Liverpool fans by tweeting: “Chelsea closing in on the signing of Timo Werner. He won’t be joining #LFC.”

As well as the £50 million transfer fee, Chelsea will pay the 24-year-old £200,000-per-week.

It will be seen as a massive coup for Frank Lampard’s side - especially with Ajax’s Hakim Ziyech already arriving.

Before the coronavirus pandemic halted football and caused havoc with club’s finances, Werner talked up reports linking him with a move to Anfield.

"I know that Liverpool is the best team at the moment in the world,” he told ViaSport back in February when asked about the Reds.

“When you’re linked with that team it makes me very proud. It’s a pleasure but I know in Liverpool plays a lot of good players and I have to improve myself to learn many more things to get on that level, to play there."

But it seems he will be playing against Liverpool next season, not for them.
