So, Timo Werner will be signing for Chelsea this summer it seems.
Out of nowhere, Frank Lampard’s side have beaten Liverpool to the signature of the RB Leipzig striker.
Werner, who has scored 25 goals in 29 Bundesliga appearances this season, has agreed to join the Blues with Liverpool pulling out of a deal that looked almost certain to happen a few months ago.
Chelsea are clearly making up for their recent transfer ban in which they were unable to sign anyone for two transfer windows.
They have already agreed a deal to bring Ajax’s Hakim Ziyech to the club with the winger arriving on July 1 for a deal in the region of £40 million.
But Chelsea may not be done there.
According to Chelsea’ correspondent at Goal, Nizaar Kinsella, Werner is one of two major signings Chelsea want to make this summer with Leicester’s Ben Chilwell being the other one.
So, how could Chelsea be lining up on the first day of next season?
Let’s take a look at three possible options:
4-3-3
Lampard favours a 4-3-3 formation and Werner would have no problems at being shifted onto the left where he loves to cut in from. Tammy Abraham would be looking to get the nod above Olivier Giroud as the centre forward. And with Ziyech's pace on the right, Chelsea would be guaranteed to score goals.
4-2-3-1
This formation is certainly more offensive - and it allows for much more flexibility. Werner could take the central forward position, allowing Christian Pulisic or Callum Hudson-Odoi to play. Mason Mount is in the No.10 role. But Ziyech could always play there, allowing Pulisic and Hudson-Odoi to operate on the wings.
4-3-1-2
Ziyech as a No.10 and Werner accompanying Abraham upfront. This formation would require the full-backs - Chilwell and James to get forward to provide the width, while Kante can cover for them.
Three very strong options for Chelsea next season to fit in their two new attacking signings. During the 2019/20 season, they really struggled for consistency - possibly due to their lack of experience. But if Werner, Ziyech and Chilwell were to arrive, Chelsea would surely fancy their chances of comfortably qualifying for Champions League football next season.
Could they even go one step further and challenge Liverpool and Manchester City for the Premier League title?
Suddenly, that doesn't seem like such a wild suggestion.
