Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to make a move for Gerson, according to Goal.

The Brazilian midfielder currently plays for Brazilian side Flamengo who he joined last summer after an ill-fated spell with Roma.

However it's believed that Jose Mourinho's side are now keen to bring the 23-year-old back to Europe.

According to the report, Daniel Levy has sanctioned a £16million move for the midfielder as he looks to reinforce the first team squad ahead of the new season. However it seems that a deal could be hard to strike.

Flamengo are reportedly keen to keep hold of their star man this summer, with the midfielder also said to be in preference of staying in Brazil.

Gerson has previously been linked with the likes of Arsenal, Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund, but even with Tottenham thought to be keen, it seems that the midfielder will be staying put.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

It certainly seems like a non-starter for Tottenham Hotspur.

While strengthening the squad this summer is certainly a priority, a move for Gerson seems like one which is too much of a gamble.

The midfielder is clearly intent on staying in Brazil, and given his lack of success during his previous spell in Europe, there remains a big question mark over his ability to make an impact at the highest level.

While £16million is a relative modest investment for a club of Tottenham's standing, I'm sure that Daniel Levy would rather use his money on a player who will be a sure-fire hit in North London.
