Tottenham Hotspur will be back in action on Friday July 19.

The date has finally been confirmed for Spurs’ return to Premier League football, when they will take on Manchester United in a match they really have to win.

Indeed, Spurs are currently four points behind Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, who are fifth, while they are also seven off fourth-placed Chelsea.

As the season kicks back into gear, one has to wonder exactly what news is surrounding Jose Mourinho’s men.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Spurs are working on extending Eric Dier’s contract at the club.

Replying to a question from a fan asking for news on the club, he replied that they are attempting to keep the England international at the club.

Dier has made 25 appearances in all competitions this season and his current contract is due to expire at the end of next season.

This may just be Spurs heading off the prospect of losing the 26-year-old on a free transfer, then, or it may well be a show of faith from Mourinho in the defensive midfielder’s abilities.

Spurs eyeing Godin move

Spurs could look to reinforce their defence with a move for Inter Milan veteran Diego Godin, per Calciomercato via the Daily Express.

Manchester United and Everton are also credited with an interest in the 34-year-old, who may be on the move in the summer transfer window.

Indeed, Spurs are likely to need a new centre-back if Jan Vertonghen leaves upon the expiration of his contract.

Godin has been there and done it all, winning La Liga with Atletico Madrid, as well as the Europa League twice and also lifting the Copa America with Uruguay.

A seasoned professional, he could add some steel and experience to that Spurs backline, provided they can beat off the competition for his signature.

New Vertonghen suitor emerges

Sticking with Vertonghen, La Nazione via Sport Witness claims that Fiorentina are interested in snapping up the Belgium international.

As previously mentioned, his contract expires this summer, and he has also been linked with Inter Milan, Napoli, and AS Roma.

However, La Nazione claims that Fiorentina have now entered the race though they face competition from an unlikely source: PSG.

Indeed, the French giants are said to be eyeing Vertonghen and it remains to be seen whether he would prioritise the likely salary on offer in Paris over the inevitability of first-team football in Florence.
