Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand have pledged an incredible $100 million donation to help fight racial injustice.

The basketball legend - who has inspired a new generation with his 'Last Dance' documentary - released a statement on Friday night in collaboration with the brand that bears his name.

The huge donation, which is equivalent to around £79 million, will be distributed over the course of the next 10 years to organisations fighting racial prejudice.

Jordan's decision comes after protests swept across the United States of America in light of the murder of George Floyd at the hands of police officers in Minnesota last week.

The Jordan Brand stated: "Black lives matter. This isn't a controversial statement. Until the ingrained racism that allows our country's institutions to fail is completely eradicated, we will remain committed to protecting and improving the lives of Black people.

Jordan makes his stance clear

"Today, we are announcing that Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand will be donating $100m over the next 10 years to organisations dedicated to ensuring racial equality, social justice and greater access to education."

It's an incredibly generous action that will hopefully inspire change across America and the rest of the world, spreading education to help people become better equipped to tackle racism and bigotry.

The news comes after Jordan released a passionate statement condemning Floyd's murder, writing: "I am deeply saddened, truly pained and plain angry. I see and feel everyone's pain, outrage and frustration.

'We must listen to each other'

"I stand with those who are calling out the ingrained racism and violence toward people of color in our country. We have had enough.

"I don't have the answers, but our collective voices show strength and the inability to be divided by others. We must listen to each other, show compassion and empathy and never turn our backs on senseless brutality.

"We need to continue peaceful expressions against injustice and demand accountability.

"Our unified voice needs to put pressure on our leaders to change our laws, or else we need to use our vote to create systemic change. Every one of us needs to be part of the solution, and we must work together to ensure justice for all.

"My heart goes out to the family of George Floyd and to the countless others whose lives have been brutally and senselessly taken through acts of racism and injustice."
