It is fair to say that Bayern Munich are probably the joint-best team on the planet right now.Alongside Premier League leaders Liverpool, the German giants look pretty much unbeatable, with the Bundesliga title all but certain to remain in Bavaria this season.In their 30 league games in 2019/20, Hansi Flick's side have scored a whopping 90 goals, which is a new record for the German top-flight.Robert Lewandowski is deservedly receiving the majority of plaudits for the team's tally, with the Pole scoring 30 goals in just 28 Bundesliga games.But the unsung hero of Bayern's brilliance under Flick has been none other than Thomas Muller.The German cult hero has reinvented himself this season as the team's chief creator in a midfield three and it has worked to devastating effect.So much so that the 30-year-old might just be the best creative midfielder on the planet right now.In his 30 Bundesliga appearances this season, Muller has already recorded 20 - yes, TWENTY - assists, as well as scoring seven times himself.The German reached the milestone in yesterday's 4-2 win away at Bayer Leverkusen as he tee'd up Lewandowski with a pinpoint cross.
He's even crossing like Kevin De Bruyne these days!
The Bundesliga's official website now credit Muller with setting the record for the most assists in a single season, pipping both De Bruyne (2014/15) and Emil Forsberg (2016/17).
They claim the aforementioned pair both recorded 19 in their respective seasons, while others state De Bruyne actually notched 20 during that memorable campaign with Wolfsburg.
But even so, Muller's numbers are simply outrageous. With four games remaining in the Bundesliga season, the Bayern man is likely to amass a final tally that may not be topped for a long, long time.
To put the German's output into perspective, the Premier League record for most assists in a season stands at 20, which was achieved by Thierry Henry in 2002/03.
Although, with 16 assists already this season and 12 rounds of fixtures left to go, De Bruyne will be eyeing up the Frenchman's tally once the English season restarts.
But will the Belgian outdo Muller in 2019/20? The battle to be European football's 'assist king' is on!
