After crisp company Tyrrell's recently announced that it would no longer be sponsoring the women’s Premier 15’s league, the RFU has announced that it is already in talks with potential replacements.

RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney told BBC Sport that there were “significant players” looking to get involved and that he was confident they could make something happen.

Concerns had been expressed that the current pandemic would have a disastrous affect on women’s rugby, which has already suffered from underfunding in recent years, but Sweeney stressed that this would not be the case.

"We're making good progress on the women's game and need to ensure that it remains a key focus for us and that the women's game is not impacted in any way disproportionately from the rest,” he said.

With huge companies such as Barclays already having a huge impact on women’s football, since it began working with the Women’s Super League, many have expressed a desire for Rugby to look to replicate this model of success.

With the women’s game continuing to show unprecedented growth, and viewing figures almost doubling year on year, the Premier 15’s looks to be an attractive proposition.

Almost 500,000 viewers tuned in over the course of the 2019/20 season, and with the right sponsorship, this number could continue to grow further. The league is desperate for some stability to help cope with the monetary losses that have been incurred as a result of COVID-19, so the sooner the RFU sorts out a new sponsor, the sooner women’s rugby can continue to thrive.
