Floyd Mayweather has hit out at Conor McGregor after the Irishman announced his retirement at the weekend. On Sunday, the Irishman shocked everyone when he announced he’s quitting from combat sports. For the third time in four years, McGregor tweeted that he won't be fighting again.“Hey guys I’ve decided to retire from fighting. Thank you all for the amazing memories! What a ride it’s been!” he wrote.

He then gave an interview explaining that he’s lost his excitement for the sport.

"The game just does not excite me, and that's that," McGregor said. "All this waiting around. There's nothing happening. I'm going through opponent options, and there's nothing really there at the minute. There's nothing that's exciting me.

"I'm a bit bored of the game. I'm here watching the fight. I watched the last show -- the Woodley-Burns show -- I watched the show tonight. I'm just not excited about the game, Ariel. I don't know if it's no crowd. I don't know what it is. There's just no buzz for me."

While there will be thousands of well-wishers, there was one man in McGregor’s inbox that wasn’t too complimentary.

After McGregor posted a picture of a cake with the words ‘Happy retirement daddy’ iced on top, a certain Mayweather decided to respond.

Mayweather beat McGregor in the boxing ring back in 2017 in what is called the biggest fight in combat sports history. And it seems the 50-0 fighter really wanted a rematch.

He wrote in the comments: “If I'm not mistaken, didn't you tell Mike Tyson you could beat me if we fought a second time? Now you're quitting!

"I thought you wanted to beat the best? Well, if you decide to come back, I will be waiting to punish you again."

Mayweather has spoken of his desire of a rematch in recent months, insisting that he'd "whip McGregor's a**" again.

But will McGregor ‘unretire’ yet again and take on Mayweather for a second time?
