Jose Mourinho’s first transfer window in charge of Spurs went by without too many fireworks last January, signing Steven Bergwijn for a fee of £27m.
However, it looks as though they could well outmuscle that this summer if everything goes according to plan.
Spurs appear to be in the market for a host of players and Mourinho will surely be praying that Daniel Levy grants him more access to the club’s money than he did when Mauricio Pochettino was in charge.
The Argentine famously failed to sign a single player in the summer of 2018 – a period of time that raised questions about the club’s transfer policy.
That type of strategy was never going to work under Mourinho, but only time will tell whether he actually gets a plethora of funds to work his magic with in the coming transfer market.
The transfer rumours are now coming at us thick and fast, dominating Spurs’ headlines on Monday. Here’s our latest round-up:
Rakitic says no
The Croatian has been linked with a move to Spurs in the past and has just over a year remaining on his current contract with Barcelona.
The midfielder seemingly wants to stay at the Nou Camp, however, despite interest from numerous parties elsewhere.
Speaking to an outlet in his homeland, he quashed rumours of a potential move this summer - denying Spurs an opportunity to bring him to north London.
He said: “I spoke to the club [Barcelona] 10 or 15 days ago and the conclusion is that I have nothing to talk about because I have a contract until the summer of 2021 with Barcelona and it is the entity I want to be in and play with.
“Furthermore, my wife and my daughters are good in the city. There is no reason to think about other things. I am training well and I am sure that Rakitic will be in Barcelona longer.”
Aarons chase steps up
On the topic of transfers, it appears Spurs, who were chasing Norwich defender Max Aarons in January, have a fresh challenger to battle in their bid to bring him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Coincidentally, they may have to go toe to toe with Arsenal in order to land the youngster.
That’s according to The Daily Mail who followed up the Gunners’ interest in a report from Goal suggesting Spurs were in the market for a right-back.
They claim that Spurs valued the Canaries defender at £15m only a few months ago but now he could cost in the region of £30m – a fee that Goal believe Arsenal are not capable of paying.
Spurs make Gerson bid
It was transfer news galore on Monday as the Brazilian version of Goal claimed that Spurs had made an official bid for Flamengo’s Gerson.
The 23-year-old is a midfielder by trade but his club rejected an offer of around €18m (£16m) for his services.
The Brazilian side claimed it was a very low offer, while Goal cited the fact he actually wanted to remain with Flamengo.
Interest from the Premier League will no doubt be flattering to Gerson but it doesn’t look as though he’ll be moving anytime soon.
