Newcastle United have asked Matty Longstaff, Andy Carroll and Javier Manquillo to sign new contracts with the club for next season.

According to The Athletic, managing director Lee Charnley has been in contact with representatives of the trio in order to discuss the idea of an extension.

These extensions are ideally planned to last the duration of next term at a minimum, with a request also being put out to get the trio to sign an extended deal until the end of the current campaign.

The Premier League season has been extended due to the ongoing global pandemic, meaning that the player's current contract expiry date of June 30 will see them miss the final fixtures of the season.

Clubs have until June 23 to get their players to agree to short-term extensions if they want them to partake in the closing stages of the campaign.

Much has been made about the future of Matty Longstaff with the growing feeling being that he could be tempted by a move to Serie A side Udinese.

As for Carroll and Manquillo, Steve Bruce is determined to ensure that his squad have the depth to handle the run-in, with both players being key members of the squad.

But while the club are keen to get the three players signed up to new deals, one man who will move on this summer is Rob Elliott who won't be offered a new deal.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This summer is going to be huge for Newcastle United.

As well as the uncertainty over a potential takeover of the club, Steve Bruce has a number of key first team players out of contract.

Andy Carroll and Javier Manquillo are valued squad members, however it's the future of Matty Longstaff which is the main concern.

To lose their hottest young talent for a nominal fee is simply unthinkable and would be a massive blow to the club.

It would go to show how poorly the club has been run in recent years, while also costing them potentially tens of millions of pounds.

It's key that Newcastle get Longstaff tied down to a new deal as he could very easily be the future of the club.
