Odsonne Edouard may have pulled on a Celtic shirt for the final time, according to Noel Whelan, per Football Insider.

The striker has been in electric form for the Scottish champions, scoring 27 goals this season and also providing 19 assists in all competitions.

That has led to interest in Edouard from across Europe, but Celtic are attempting to tie him down to a new deal, according to the aforementioned report.

Football Insider has previously claimed that the 22-year-old wants a release clause included in any deal and Whelan is convinced that such a clause will be included, and could well see him leave the club, though he believes he will absolutely wait until the summer to put pen to paper.

Edouard’s current contract does not expire until 2022.

He said: “I very much believe there would be a release clause if he did sign.

“Edouard and his agents will have an idea of what he is worth and they will not leave themselves out.

“Strikers that can score goals are hard to come by. He can score all kinds of goals.

“He will demand a good fee so if he does sign a new contract it will be in there.

“I am unsure whether if he would put pen to paper until pre-season. Anything can happen between now and then. He does not want to put all of his eggs in one basket.

“If he is going to be playing his football elsewhere, it will be from the start of the season and he never wear a Celtic shirt again. There is a long time to go between now and the start of next season.”

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

Whelan is almost certainly right.

Edouard has no reason to commit himself to Celtic at this point.

He’s scoring goals and he’s perhaps the best striker in Scotland at this point in time.

To put pen to paper and tie himself to the Scottish giants simply doesn’t make sense; he’ll almost certainly wait and see what kind of clubs are interested in taking him away from Celtic Park.

If he does eventually sign, having a release clause makes all the sense in the world too; this is a complex saga, but don’t expect a resolution any time soon.
