Liverpool’s win against AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final has been voted the greatest comeback in sporting history.

Bookmaker Coral celebrated the imminent return of sport by asking fans what their favourite comebacks are - with Liverpool’s thrilling win from 3-0 down coming out on top.

Among the events to make the top 10 were Tyson Fury’s return to claim the boxing heavyweight crown and Michael Jordan winning three NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls after returning in 1995.

But the Miracle of Istanbul was ranked No.1.

In 2005, Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool fell 3-0 down to AC Milan in the first half of the Champions League final.

But they levelled up the scores in the second half before going on to win on penalties.

10. Michael Jordan returns to the Chicago Bulls

Jordan won three NBA titles in ’91, ’92 and ’93 before announcing his retirement from basketball.

He returned in 1995 to lead the Bulls to a second three-peat, clinching the series against Utah in 1998 with the game-winning shot.

9. Manchester City beat QPR to win 2011/12 Premier League

Trailing 2-1 with minutes to go, it looked like City’s hopes of winning the Premier League title were going to go up in flames.

But late goals from Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero saw them land their first title in 44 years.

8. Aldaniti & Bob Champion win 1981 Grand National

Jockey Champion recovered from cancer to win the 1981 Grand National. The story has since been made into a film.

7. Liverpool v Barcelona in 2019 Champions League semi-final

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds lost 3-0 in the first leg at Camp Nou but produced an extraordinary comeback thanks to doubles from Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum to reach the final.

6. Niki Lauda winning two F1 World Championships after serious crash

Lauda was back in his Ferrari just SIX weeks after his horror crash at the German Grand Prix in 1976.

Lauda’s 312T2 burst into flames and the Austrian nearly died after inhaling toxic fumes and suffering severe burns.

His second title arrived the following year and he won a third in 1984.

5. England v Australia Ashes Test at Headingley in 2019

England appeared to be heading for certain defeat in the third Test at Headingley after being bowled out for just 67 in their first innings.

However, Ben Stokes hit an unbeaten 135*, which included 11 four and eight sixes, to reach a target of 359 and save the series.

4. England v Australia Ashes Test at Headingley in 1981

This time, Ian Botham was the hero.

He stepped up with a heroic 149 not out to save the third Test.

3. Man United v Bayern Munich in 1999 Champions League final

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side trailed in injury-time before Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer both grabbed late goals to complete a remarkable treble.

2. Tyson Fury claiming the world heavyweight title

Fury’s career went on a downward spiral after he defeated Wladimir Klitschko in 2015.

He suffered mental health problems, battled drug and alcohol issues and his weight ballooned to 27 stone.

However in March 2020, he regained his place at the top of the heavyweight division by defeating the previously unbeaten Deontay Wilder in Las Vegas.
