WWE star Elias has suffered a torn pectoral muscle and will be out of action for at least a few months.

He was written off TV two weeks ago as the victim of the storyline that opened May 29th's episode of SmackDown.

In the segment, Elias was seen being taken away by an ambulance after Jeff Hardy had apparently knocked him down during a hit and run.

Last week, WWE issued a storyline update on The Drifter, noting that he suffered a torn pec and broken ribs.

According to Dave Meltzer of F4Wonline.com, the muscle injury is legitimate, and Elias is expected to be on the shelf for at least several months.

It's another blow for the WWE star, whose career has been derailed by a number of injuries.

There was a time when he was heavily tipped to become one of the company's top guys, but since debuting on the main roster in 2017, that hasn't happened.

In the last 12 months, Elias has wrestled just 12 singles matches and has been used more as a backstage character instead.

He was recently feuding with King Corbin and had a match at WrestleMania, suggesting WWE did have some plans for him.

Elias took part in WrestleMania

But those will now have to be shelved as The Drifter will miss more action.

He was written off TV in a controversial angle too. Many fans took exception to WWE using Jeff hardy's previous real-life police charges in a storyline.

On SmackDown, The Charismatic Enigma was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol after hitting Elias.

Elias was taken away as part of a storyline

He returned later that night and revealed he was framed for the accident, but some viewers still hit out at WWE on social media for using the angle.

Perhaps though, when Elias does return from his legitimate injury, he'll be feuding with the person who set the whole storyline up? Sheamus, we're looking at you!
