It’s been announced that the latest game in the 'Need for Speed' franchise is currently in development.
The game will be the first since 'Need for Speed: Heat' was released last year.
The general manager of Criterion Games Matt Webster revealed the news by saying: “I wanted to let you all know how excited our team here in Guildford is to be back in the driver’s seat of development for Need for Speed.”
It was previously announced that the company in charge of creating the game changed from Ghost Games to Criterion Games.
Webster went on to say: “As you’ll know we have real history with racing and with Need for Speed. We’re focused on bringing Criterion’s unique point of view, unparalleled game feel and high-quality innovations that will chart a new future for this wonderful games series.”
Criterion have not yet disclosed the title of the game, although they have revealed the latest update for 'Need for Speed: Heat'. The update is set to bring crossplay to Heat and will be the final one in the game. It is available from today.
Criterion seem to be open to learning from their players’ experience in previous games, as the statement continued by saying: “We’re listening to what you love about this experience and what you believe could be even better. With these insights, we have a terrific foundation to create the most expressive, most socially connected, action-packed game yet for Need for Speed fans.”
The franchise has been hugely successful since it started in 1994, with games being released almost every year to fans’ delight. 'Need for Speed: Underground' (2003) and 'Need for Speed: Most Wanted' (2005) remain the most popular games in the franchise’s history, both having sold over 15 million copies worldwide.
It looks like the latest game in the franchise will pay homage to its predecessors while also incorporating players’ experiences and ideas throughout its development.
Criterion are yet to announce the release date or trailer for the new game.
